TriCore Aurix Tuning Protection 6.20 (MG1/MD1) – Local Unlocking
Modern vehicles from approximately mid-2020 onwards are equipped with a new generation of Bosch engine control units (ECUs) that are protected by extended Tuning Protection (TP 6.20). Conventional OBD tuning is blocked in these vehicles.
Many tuning providers have to send the removed ECU to specialized laboratories abroad (e.g., Finland or Belgium/Luxembourg). This means several days of waiting, high shipping risks, and unnecessary complications for you. Furthermore, any tuning modifications are then performed abroad. The local provider is essentially just an intermediary/reseller. Any customer requests, such as EGR or AdBlue removal, can only be fulfilled if the foreign laboratory offers them. The tuner you commission is then merely a conduit!
ChipTuningPower.COM offers you the solution: We unlock your ECU directly on-site in Switzerland!
Affected Technology & Models (MD1 / MG1)
The tuning protection applies to all vehicles equipped with the latest versions of the Bosch MD1 (diesel) and MG1 (gasoline) control units, which often use the TriCore AURIX microcontroller. The largest manufacturers using Bosch MG1/MD1 and implementing these protection measures from mid-2020 onwards (hence the designation TP 6.20) are:
| Brand | Affected model series (examples) | Affected engines (examples) | ECU type |
| BMW | G-Serien(z.B. G20/G21 3er, G30/G31 5er, G42 2er, G22/G23 4er, G01/G02 X3/X4, G05 X5, F40 1er) | B48, B58, B38, S58, S63, N63 (neuere Versionen) | MG1 / MD1 |
| Volkswagen (VAG) | Golf 8 (neuere), Passat, Arteon, Tiguan, T-Roc (neuere Modelle ab ca. 2021) | EA888 Gen. 3B/4 (z.B. 2.0 TSI/TFSI, 1.5 TSI), neuere TDI (z.B. 2.0 TDI) | MG1 / MD1 |
| Audi (VAG) | A3 (8Y), A4/A5 (B9 Facelift ab 2021), Q3, Q5, RS-Modelle (neuere) | 2.0 TFSI, 3.0 TDI/TFSI (neuere Versionen) | MG1 / MD1 |
| Mercedes-Benz | Neuere Modelle der A-, C-, E-Klasse, GLC, GLE | M 254, M 260 (Benziner), OM 654, OM 656 (Diesel) | MD1 / MG1 |
| Porsche | 992 Carrera, Panamera, Cayenne (neuere Modelle) | 4.0 V8, 3.0 V6 (neuere Versionen) | MG1 |
| Mini | F5x/F6x (neuere Modelle) | B38, B48 (neuere Versionen) | MG1 |
| Toyota | Supra A90 (baugleich mit BMW Z4, betrifft i.d.R. 3.0L B58 Motor) | B58 | MG1 |
Manufacturers are switching to MG1/MD1 with TriCore AURIX not only to prevent tuning, but primarily to ensure functional safety and meet cybersecurity requirements according to the new international standards (ASIL, ISO 21434). Tuning Protection 6.20 is an unintended (but welcome) side effect of this enhanced security architecture for manufacturers.
Tamper Protection:
The HSM is a dedicated hardware unit that manages cryptography and secure storage. Tuning Protection 6.20 uses this HSM to protect the bootloader and employ cryptographic keys. Only those who possess the correct key (i.e., the vehicle manufacturer or authorized service providers) can read or write the software.
Lokales Unlock-Verfahren (Bench Unlock)
To bypass the factory lock, we use the secure bench unlock procedure:
-
Appointment scheduling: You bring your vehicle to our location.
-
ECU removal: Our technicians professionally remove the control unit.
-
Local unlocking: We establish a direct connection to the TriCore AURIX chip and permanently remove the tuning protection. This is done in-house.
-
Chip tuning: We upload the performance-enhancing software, individually tailored to your vehicle.
-
Reinstallation: The control unit is reinstalled.
The result: A permanently unlocked control unit, ready for your desired tuning – without days of downtime due to international shipping.
